Teachers Are Furious With Annette Young

Posted on Feb 27, 2010

Representative Annette Young was a leading sponsor in the 2006 House of Representative's passage of Act 388, that shifted school operating expenses to the current unstable State 1% sales tax funding mechanism. House Bill H.4585, a joint resolution extending the deadline for the South Carolina Taxation Realighment Commission (TRAC) from March 14, 2010 to November 15, 2010, was passed by the House and sent to the Senate on February 26, 2010. Representative Horne from Summerville was a co-sponsor of the bill but Annette Young's absence in being a co-sponsor of H.4585 was very telling to District 2 Teachers.

Representative Young's lst Vice Chair leadership position on the House Ways and Means Committee and her desire to save face by 'excluding' any re-consideration of Act 388 in the House language, has resulted in teachers bearing the brunt of education funding cuts without consideration of possible alternative school funding ideas. And, by not co-sponsoring H.4585, that could have possibly 'included' another look at Act 388,Representative Young's lack of support for H.4585 is shutting out teachers and students from any new sustantainable educational funding possibilities. She did vote for madatory furlough days for teachers and school administrators.
